NB: A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of chatting with Pike Place Market. During our talk, Pike Place spoke briefly about their friend The Gum Wall. Now that we are clear of the market’s holiday hustle and bustle, Gum Wall has made time to connect with us and share some secrets. Welcome, Gum Wall, and thank you for speaking with us today.

Nicole Bearden (NB): Since we are deep into Seattle’s dark days (Winter), I thought it was about time to talk to our most famous, local, glacial icon: The Seattle Freeze. Thanks so much for joining us today, Freeze. What have you been up to?

Seattle Freeze (SF): Oh, just chilling. The usual.

NB: Snorts Oh! Ha. Very funny.

3 weeks, 12 venues, 100+ performances. The San Francisco Sketch Festival (SF SketchFest) is renowned as the largest festival dedicated to stand-up, improv, sketch, and all comedic art forms. The 2025 world-class lineup includes Bill Murray, Kathryn Hahn, Tim Curry, the casts of Futurama and Children’s Hospital, and an anniversary staged reading of Airplane!

After John Oliver’s aggressive campaign for the Puteketeke to become New Zealand’s Bird of the Century, it seemed only right that I follow in his footsteps to elect my own Pacific Northwest Bird of the Century. I may not go so far as to don a giant bird-suit on live television (like John Oliver did on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show), but I’ll happily offer up my own strong opinions of the little flying creatures we see around the Sound. So buckle up for the Top 10 Birds of the PNW, culminating in my pick for the PNW’s Bird of the Century.

BS: The more people change, the more they remain the same. People, seasons, time—they all cycle, they all come back to incipience.

I bear witness to the spinning wheels of time, the turning clock of seasons, and the joys and sorrows of man—I bear it all and it is both a heavy burden, and a lightsome ecstasy. 

A trio of squirrels playing tag in my tree friends' branches. The cries of a woman brought to regret by a loathsome monster. And in between are the mediocre events, such as life and death which keep us turning—I see all.

NB: Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview, Mr. Kraken. I think a lot of people were confused when the Seattle Kraken’s mascot turned out to be…not a Kraken. Can you give us the inside scoop?

BK: Call me Brodie. Mr. Kraken is my dad and he's a huge bummer. I’m so stoked to get a chance to set the record straight, man. It’s been heavy since that little troll weirdo got picked over me.

Pike Place Market: Haha, that's right! But I am happy to have the chance to speak on my own behalf for once, and perhaps set the record straight on a few things.

It’s often said that there is the technical and the creative and ne’er the twain shall meet. But local author Lauren Appelbaum aims to show otherwise with the release of her debut novel Rachel Weiss’s Group Chat.

Producer, podcast host, stand-up, improviser, writer, influencer. These are hardly enough words to describe the mega-talent that is Molina Molina. With just three years in the Seattle comedy scene at the age of 23, she has taken the city by storm. I caught up with her to chat comedy, harnessing your voice, and much more as she gears up to perform for her second consecutive year at the San Francisco Sketch Festival (the US’s largest sketch festival), featuring talent like the cast of Futurama and Bill Murray in January 2025

After seeingScott Shoemaker’s War on Christmas!, I can say confidently that this is a show you absolutely cannot miss. With a wicked sense of humor, fantastic musical parodies, and costumes that are equal parts stunning and hilarious, War on Christmas! has it all. Even this writer, a known Christmas naysayer, found the holiday spirit while watching this spectacular production, and it will no-doubt melt even the Grinchiest of hearts. This annual Christmas show, brought to us by Shoes and Pants Productions and Theatre Off Jackson, makes a wonderful introduction to the holiday season and will fill you with Xmas joy.

Shoes & Pants Productions and Theatre Off Jackson presents the return of their LGBTQ+ holiday show, Scott Shoemaker’s War on Christmas! Co-written by the talented Freddy Molitch and Shott Shoemaker, this variety show promises to bring a little cheer to those of us who feel outcasted by the Xmas season. With a self-proclaimed group of “queerdos,” you can surely expect a warm and inclusive welcome as Scott Shoemaker explores various holiday traditions with a new—and sometimes naughty—eye.

“Almost Live!” and “Portlandia”: two sketch comedy shows which expertly skewered Pacific Northwest stereotypes and culture, made national acclaim, and proved to the masses that there are more jokes to be made about Seattle and Portland than “we like coffee!” and “oh look, there’s rain”.  

Loyal fans love these shows for depicting a heightened yet accurate look at living here, such as in sketches like “How Seattle Are You?”, “Colin the Chicken”, “Ballard Driving School”, and “Battle of the Gentle Bands”. Avid binge-watchers of these shows, however, might find themselves wondering…Where are all the Black people?

Local filmmaker Tim Lightell has released a Manbaby into the world. The film is about Sal and Dana, a married couple who encounter a snag in their relationship when Dana reveals she doesn't want kids. Sal comes up with a harebrained scheme, he pretends he's been transformed into a baby, to try and trick Dana into getting on board with the idea of children. Yet, his plan doesn't work out exactly as he hoped.

Ah, the open mic. All comedy babies’ first step. The watering hole where veteran amateurs and “I’ve always wanted to try” newbies gather to throw cold wet spaghetti (jokes) at a wall (their friends, and bar patrons who did not know this was going on tonight) to see what sticks!

At its core, the open mic is a place for everyone—yes everyone—to come in and try new (stand-up only) material. But traditional open mics have a reputation;it’s become synonymous now with dive bars, pool balls clacking over your tight five, and comedians performing sets comprised of hate speech scantily veiled as “just a joke”.

Seattle’s premiere improv comedy theaters have creaked the mansion doors wide open this Halloween season with blood-curdling new (and returning) shows, combining horror and comedy!

Steampunk can be treated in a really serious fashion, as any genre can be. There is very serious steampunk fiction—I really recommend reading Everfair by Nisi Shawl if you want some very beautiful serious steampunk fiction—but also there’s a certain element to steampunk that is absurd. It’s ridiculous! And we are leaning into that. And sometimes people need to be reminded as adults, especially in this hard, hard world, that you can laugh! You can just come and as the English say, take the piss out of something.

SketchFest Seattle—the world’s original comedy festival—returns this weekend, celebrating 25 years of comedy gold. Nestled sweetly smack dab in the middle of Pike Place Market’s Gum Wall, the historic Market Theater (owned and operated by Unexpected Productions) will once again serve as the headquarters of Seattle’s sketch comedy resplendence. From Friday through Sunday, this iconic venue will host Seattle’s annual sketch comedy festival, bringing together some of the brightest comedic minds from across North America. Performers from Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Toronto, New York, and more major cities will gather alongside Seattle teams for three glorious days of comedic sketch excellence… Sketchellence? Sure, why not.

One of the things that I think makes us really unique in the steampunk space is that our events are in general designed to be us as hosts or facilitators and the guests are the stars. They get to be performers. We have what I call the Big 3 competitions that we run, which is Tea Duelling, Splendid Teapot Racing (RC cars shaped to look like teapots that you run through an obstacle course), and Madame Askew’s creation: Compliment Duelling.

Some might think that Joan of Arc is the original Queen of Queens, but they would be wrong. For us at The Evergreen Echo, Fran Lebowitz is that dyke who established what it really means to converse in “real talk.” Our dame of the dry wit returns to Benaroya Hall on Sunday September 22nd at 7:30pm in an intimate chat hosted by bestselling Seattle author Claire Dederer. Fran offers her acerbic views on current events and the media—as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. In addition, she will share her unique take on the current state of our Union, which we are sure will be a hoot and a half.
