Solidarity Through Action: MLK Day March Unites Diverse Movements
I attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day march in Seattle’s Central District on January 20, 2025. That day was also the inauguration of our nation’s 47th president, Donald Trump. Many Americans are tired of talking about politics and Trump. Well, not everyone. I think there’s something about this coalescence of events that stands to unite us more than divide us. Hope stems from the fact that this march, which at times threatened to be more about Trump than Dr. King, ultimately succeeded to underscore the importance of some of the very radical problems King was putting his lifeforce into trying to solve before he was assassinated.
Creature Panic Chats beso bears, Guerilla Art at Punk Rock Flea Market
I found them in the middle of their half-workspace, half-gallery corner of flea market paradise. They were surrounded by their signature beso bears and clutching a black marker with a corgi sock as a custom grip. A 6x4’ painting with three bears appearing to pounce in place in a meadow with a stream hung overhead. A few sculptures—conglomerations of various scavenged items—were placed at the edges of this scene to delineate the creative zone.
Punk Rock Flea Market: Mainstay of Seattle’s Underground Arts
I had last been to the Punk Rock Flea Market (PRFM) in July, while they were hosting the Seattle Zine Fest. The legendary market is currently hosted at 416 15th Ave E—the retail space of an old QFC. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog's Justin Carder chronicled the PRFM's journey, saying it has filled voids in the community by occupying the retail spaces of at least four shuttered storefronts.
SAM VSO Union Strikes on Black Friday After Years of Corporate Misdeeds
The SAM VSO Union consists of a group of 54 Visitor Service Officers, or VSOs. On Black Friday, they started their strike. Strikes are typically one of the last options a union will exercise to make clear to their employer and the general public that their working conditions are unacceptable and their concerns up until this point have been largely ignored. Before the formation of the SAM VSO Union, there were a series of escalations in organized action against Seattle Art Museum (SAM) leadership and policies.

On October 23, 2024, Kamala Harris said at a Town Hall that "we have to get past the era of partisan politics." I understand her strategy. The idea that these times are bigger than partisan politics is easy for disaffected liberals to accept and cast a begrudging vote for Harris at the end of the day. The argument is as simple as it is stark: Trump is far worse. With the intent of overturning Roe v. Wade, Trump appointed justices to the Supreme Court who eventually did just that, removing Americans' constitutional right to get an abortion.
Melissa Chaudhry’s Strong Policies Challenge Adam Smith’s Complicity in Genocide
Democrat Melissa Chaudhry has made it to the general election for Washington congressional district 9’s seat in the US House of Representatives. She’s challenging the nearly 28-year incumbent Democrat Adam Smith who has denied the genocide in Gaza. His largest donor by far is the pro-Israel AIPAC, the biggest source of Republican money influencing Democratic primaries. Chaudhry runs a grassroots campaign. Smith just voted to send $26 billion to Israel—$14.1 billion of which is for U.S-made weapons.

Kirsten McCory: Reflections of Creative Diversity
Kirsten McCory is a Seattle-area actor, playwright, voice artist, and model. Several months ago I had the pleasure of acting in a stage reading of a play she wrote called In The Garden. A few months later, I was invited to do a table read of another play she is creating: 100% Solution. I realized later that being immersed in Kirsten’s writing gave my inner artist lessons about creativity and self-expression that anyone can benefit from. Always diligently moving through some part of the creative process, she dares to dream—and all the better for the dynamic worlds and multifaceted characters she manifests into theaters near you. Kirsten McCory is currently playing the character of Amanda Wingfield in a local production of the Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie.
